We moved a lot of items but still have a sizeable collection of left-overs, including lots and lots of books, small TVs, punch bowl, clothes, small bikes, picture frames, etc. etc. Our original plan was to donate leftover items to the SPCA. However, I'd like to make an offer first to our Band Parents. A $40 check to the DHS Band Boosters gets you EVERYTHING that is leftover. You can do with it as you wish: have your own garage sale, take it to your favorite charity, give stuff to distant relatives as presents, give it away on the streets of Davis, cherish it for your own home! All you have to do is provide one check to the Boosters and come take it all (and I do mean ALL--part of the deal is to take everything). If you're interested, please respond to me by October 14. The event was so popular that we had to turn away customers at the end of the morning. Anyone driving by the intersection of 5th and B Streets was greeted by our enthusiastic barkers hoisting brightly colored car wash signs and blue and white balloons. A wide variety of dirty cars and trucks were treated to a thorough vacuum, sudsy wash, refreshing rinse, and finally a meticulous drying and window cleaning. Pat Lange (a completely unbiased consumer) gave us the "thumbs up" and was quick to point out that the students even cleaned the underside of her car's rear spoiler - a place that previous car washes ignored. A hearty congratulations to all of the students and parents who really hustled to work as a team and move the many cars through the line. Images of Susan Hulsizer directing traffic and valeting fancy red sports cars and Sue Viguie using her elbow grease to get every window spotless are still dancing in my mind. Thanks to all those who brought the delicious snacks and co-coordinator Michael O'Brien & Lisa Yamauchi for donating the balloons along with numerous car washing supplies. Special thanks to Steve and Mary Kay Williams, Peter Matlock, and Dennis Edgerley whose presence and support were invaluable. Next car washes: Saturday, October 14th and Saturday, October 28th from 8am-12noon. Please encourage your students to sign up to work and be sure to bring all of your dirty cars by for Northern California's best wash! Due to several events that conflicted with the September meeting, Fred Lange has offered again to award points to a Band student whose parents were unable to attend the September meeting and who attend the October meeting. A student will receive 25 points if one parent attends and 30 points if both parents attend. By attending the meeting, you can also verify the information currently posted in the Band students' database. Agenda items include reports on the Jazz Band's performance at last month's Monterey Jazz Festival, the successful car wash and rummage sale held last Saturday, the Direct Donation Appeal campaign, notice of an organizational meeting for the Coconut Grove Planning Committee and information on coming musical events in October, November and December. Susan Hulsizer, our newsletter editor, will be explaining how you can opt to receive your monthly Band Boosters' newsletter electronically -- which will help save printing and postage costs for the Band Boosters. She also will be asking your opinion on whether the electronic newsletter posted to the Band Boosters' web site should include full names, telephone numbers and e-mail addresses. Direct Donation Appeal campaign will continue through November 15, 2006. Our original solicitation letter was sent to approximately 150 businesses and corporations in the area. Obviously we didn?t reach everyone who might make a donation to support the DHS Bands program. We would appreciate your suggestions for additional businesses, corporations or community organizations that we should contact. We need the name of the business or organization, the mailing address and, preferably, the name of an individual to whom the letter should be addressed. Don?t worry about whether we?ve already sent a letter to your suggested donor. We?ll review our original mailing list to eliminate any duplications. Last week we raised a whopping $1,100 and students who worked earned about $10/hour towards their Disneyland trip account. Please remember to: 1. bring your dirty cars by for a wash and encourage neighbors and friends to do the same 2. encourage your students to participate (even if they haven't signed up to work). Bid sheets and item information sheets are all on a CD so all you would have to do is print out those that are repeats from last year or substitute the new information for the old.
