This terrific professional jazz ensemble will present the Music of Charlie Parker with Strings, and will feature guest alto saxophonist, Andrew Speight from San Francisco, as well as a 12 piece string ensemble. Capital Jazz Project (CJP) is an ensemble of five highly talented professional jazz musicians, who are Artists-in-Residence and faculty of the Jazz Major program at American River College. CJP members are also on staff at UCD and CSUS in the Departments of Music. CJP is a non-profit organization whose mission is "to create an atmoshere of respect for jazz as a high level art form, equal to classical music and other ethnic musics, and to present repertoire that is diverse and representative of the complete history of the genre." CJP receives support from the CA Arts Council, the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission, and the Sacramento Bee, and has released 3 CDs. Each year since its formation in 1997, CJP has given several self-produced, thematic concerts in the Sacramento area. The concerts include vibrant performances of jazz compositions, interspersed with condensed, informative lessons in jazz history. This year, their theme is A Season in Bebop, with separate concerts featuring the music of Sonny Rollins, Dizzy Gillespie, Bud Powell, and Charlie Parker. On Sunday, Feb. 19 @ 7 pm, CJP will present Tempus Fugit: the Genius of Bud Powell, the Father of Modern Jazz Piano @ CSUSacramento's Capistrano Hall (6000 J Street, Sacramento). Tickets: $12 General/ $8 Students and Seniors. We look forward to hosting the Capital Jazz Project on March 26 here in Davis. Our DHS band students are invited to observe an open rehearsal of the performing musicians during the afternoon of the concert. CJP members are also planning to work with the DHS Jazz Band during two practice sessions in March. DHS Band Boosters are proud to sponsor the efforts of these music educators, and hope you will support this community cultural enrichment by coming to the concert at the IPAB Theater on Sun., March 26 @ 7 pm. I received the email below within the last hour and decided to pass it on ASAP **************** Hi Fred, ? I hope all is well with you. I just wanted to pass on to you and your students that the?Davis High School Big Band and Combo have been selected to participate in our Next Generation Festival again. Congratulations! Due to the high number of High School submissions this year (more than double previous years),?it took us a lot longer to get the results from the folks at Berklee. I do apologize for the delay. ? I will be sending you an official notice with some information regarding hotels, bus parking, schedule, etc. Meanwhile, if you could ascertain the number of hotel rooms you will need for your group and your preference for hotel (Portola Plaza or Monterey Marriott), I will begin the process of ?blocking ?and holding rooms for you. ? Please note, because of the popularity of the event, our discounted room block at the Portola Plaza Hotel sold out early last year. To prevent this, we are holding a number of rooms for school groups only plus a reasonable number of chaperones (by reasonable I am considering one chaperone for every 5 students). Some parents have already contacted the host hotels and are stunned that although they are still offered a discounted room ($179 at the Portola Plaza; $189 at the Monterey Marriott), it is not the same rate as the school group rate ($129/139 at the Portola Plaza; $144 at the Marriott). We have negotiated this two-tiered rate system with the hotels in order to keep the costs down for our participating schools. I hope you understand and can help explain this to any concerned parents other than chaperones who want to attend the event. I do have alternate hotels I can recommend that are within walking distance of the Conference Center. ? If your plans should change and you are unable to participate, please let me know as soon as possible so that I may contact one of the alternate groups. Again, my congratulations and I look forward to hearing the band in April! Rob -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... The Spring Tour to San Diego for the bands is shaping up nicely. One of our venues is a picturesque spot adjacent to Seaport Village on the San Diego Bay at Embarcadero Marina Park. The Combined Bands will perform there for an hour on Saturday May 20. This venue has no power so we must supply our own for the electric bass and microphone system. We cannot transport a gas generator with gas on our buses so we must obtain one locally. I have not been able to find an event rental vendor with a quiet "Honda" type 2000+ watt gas powered generator in the San Diego area. But I did find a Home Depot that carries one. We must pick it up, fill it with gas, and return it within 4 hours for the economical rate of $28. (Party vendors wanted to charge $150 to deliver and pick up same day for the noisy one). So I am asking if any of you are either planning to drive yourselves to San Diego and attend the Saturday venues so that you could be assigned the task of picking up the 30 lb small generator, filling it with gas, and returning it after the performance. OR if any of you have relatives in the San Diego area who are such good sports to take on this task for the Band. If you can help solve this dilemma, please contact Esther Rose at drciston at dcn.davis.ca.us or telephone (530)400-9187. Thanks so much. So, we're on schedule to travel to Reno on April 27 and return to Davis on April 30. We have 2 combos and the big band entered to compete in this festival (either Apr 28 or 29). Peter and Janet Matlock will be hosting a meeting for all Jazz Band parents at their home (1115 Radcliffe) at 7:30 pm on Monday, March 6. It is essential that at least one parent of each Jazz Band student attends this mtg, as arrangements for the Reno and the Monterey Jazz Festivals will be finalized. I need one or two Jazz Band parents to assume responsibility for making our Monterey hotel group arrangements and organizing the carpools to Monterey. All parents: please bring your check books to this meeting. Treasurer, Dennis Edgerley, has prepared financial account statements for all DHS Band students and inserted them into the March Band Booster newsletter, which you should all be receiving next week. Any funds that Jazz Band students have accumulated over the cost of the San Diego trip, can be applied to their Jazz Band trip expenses. As with all DHS Band trips, financial aid is available to any student needing assistance. Please speak directly to Mr. Lange, and your request will be confidentially processed by the Band Booster Treasurer. Please remind your students to e-mail me regarding their availability for evening practice sessions with Mike McMullin/Joe Gilman. (Mar 6, Mar 23, Mar 27). I spoke to them in Jazz Band class last week about this. I've heard back from 9 students so far. Thanks for your attention to the important info in this e-mail.
