Therefore, the total amount of money we make at each Car Wash will be divided into the accounts of those students who work at that carwash. Each student shift represents 2 hours. Be sure to sign in and out with the parent volunteer in charge of your shift. (Look for the one with the clipboard.) Since the Car Washes will be held from 8 am- 12 noon, students may work up to 2 shifts per Saturday. Shifts run from 8-10 am or from 10 am-12 noon. Students from any of the 3 DHS Bands (Concert, Symphonic, Jazz) may work any shift at either Car Wash. This fundraiser will only benefit the accounts of those students who participate. We have a few parent volunteers for Oct 15, but we really need some parent volunteers for this Saturday's (Oct 8) Car Wash from 8 am - 12 noon in the DJUSD Office parking lot (4th and B). 2) Band Booster Meeting: Thursday, October 13 I also want to remind parents who were unable to attend our September Band Booster meeting, that Mr. Lange will award points to students for each parent that attends the October 13 Band Booster meeting at 7:30 pm in the Band Room. This is a "first meeting" benefit. Students whose parent/s attended the Sept. meeting have already been awarded their points, and will not receive additional points for the Oct. meeting. Hope to see lots of you at the October Car Washes and the Oct. 13 Band Booster meeting! I am enclosing a flyer that you can print out and help publicize the event. The Davis Enterprise is doing some pre-publicity and will have an article within the next week about the event. The concert features the DHS Jazz Band, Choir and Quintet. Also featured will be the 'J 'Street Jazz Cats and Sax by Popular Demand. My original idea was to collect teenage clothing and send them to an overflow school in Baton Rouge. After speaking to many people both in Louisiana and in Davis, it turns out that they do not need clothes or food now. A local grassroots organization in Davis who have already driven several trucks into Louisiana have established links with two small towns there (Bogalusa, pop. 13,000 and Sun, pop. 480). Both these towns were completely devastated. Read the story at: www.davisenterprise.com/articles/2005/09/17/news/106new0.txt The teenagers there have requested new or used CDs radios/portable CD players, radios, etc. (batteries included!). So I have abandoned the idea of a clothes drive. Instead I'm requesting that every kid coming to the concert bring a CD or two along. Their parents can donate to the Red Cross. Also don't forget to bring along used or new pet leashes and collars. The Best Friends Shelter in Tylertown, Mississippi is still receiving many lost dogs and cats. I hope I can count on you to bring yours family and friends and make this a great night of jazz. Thanks for your support, Colin Borges (530) 753-2105 jazzophone at sbcglobal.net Donations Any of the following: ? New or used CD's, and/or portable radios/ CD players with batteries to donate to teenagers in 2 devastated small towns in Louisiana, Bogalusa (pop 13,000) and Sun (pop. 4800). Clothes and food are no longer needed. ? Pet leashes & collars: Will be taken to Tylertown, Mississippi, Oct. 16th by a local veterinarian volunteering at the Best Friends Animal shelter. ? Monetary donations to the Red Cross. Suggested donations $10 or $20 per family. ? Donations will also be accepted from 1 to 3pm at Da Vinci High School on Sunday, October 16th. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Participating students collectively earned $700.00 toward their Spring Trip accounts. Individually, this came out to $11.55 per hour of work. Thanks for your hard work and thanks to our parent volunteers. I have washed and dried all the rags and towels. They are folded and in 2 large rectangular boxes in my carport, along with some hose nozzles, squeegies, buckets, window cleaning solution bottles, one green hose, a drying rack, a nylon cord used for drying rags, and a yellow Y connector for hoses. Please stop by (918 Colby Drive) and pick up your equipment. Towels, rags, and solutions that are not picked up will be stored for future Band Car Washes. Thank you very much for bringing supplies and equipment for the students to use and for your volunteer hours. I really appreciate the people who pitched in to make these car washes so successful. The attendance was fantastic. From the tickets issued and programs given out, there may have been about 400 people in the 500-seat theater. Here's a list of what was collected: Red Cross $2098 CDs 347 CD Players 7 Radio/Cassette Players 2 Batteries 138 Pet Collars/Leashes 157 Refreshment Sales $80 This is not a final total since donations are still coming in. The pet collars and leashes are already in Tylertown, Miss. My Mom took them there on Sunday. There are many dogs and cats still arriving at the shelter in bad shape. The shelter that was supposed to close next week will be continuing their work until Thanksgiving. I'm going to go to the local record stores to see whether they can add to the collection of CDs before I send it off to 2 small towns in Louisiana (see the story at www.davisenterprise.com/articles/2005/09/17/news/106new0.txt ) I would like to get any photos and videos of the event. If you have any or know of anyone who has, can I get a copy? Thanks again, Colin Borges -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Fred Lange has included an article in the November newsletter regarding the Jazz Band uniforms. He asks any family unable to pay the cost of the shirt or tie to contact him directly. You may also contact Dennis Edgerley, the Band Boosters treasurer. All contacts will be completely confidential. Message-ID: <8E6747D3-B8E9-4954-AA32-87E5881F7344@ucdavis.edu> The Coconut Grove organizational meeting will be held this Weds night (2nd Nov.) at 7:30 PM at the Borges residence, 736 Oeste Drive (between 8th and Russell Blvd). We will discuss what we want to do with the event this year and sign up for different committees. Coconut Grove is an all band event where we create a night club like atmosphere with music, dinner and dancing with a silent auction on one night and host a jazz festival for area jazz bands the next day. Last year we raised over $9,000 for the band boosters. It is the biggest band fund raiser of the year. We need lots of volunteers to make this event a success. It is a fun event to plan and work on--so bring your ideas and come to the meeting. If you can't make it but still want to help please send me an email.
