Democrats stung by mailer endorsing Johnson, Peters

Local Democratic Party leaders are decrying a last-minute mailer sent to
voters endorsing Sacramento mayoral candidate Kevin Johnson and Sacramento
County Supervisor Susan Peters in Tuesday's election.

The mailer from a group called "Democratic Voters Choice" urges voters to
"vote Democratic." Peters is a Republican.

Neither Peters nor Johnson is endorsed by the Sacramento County Democratic
Party, which has endorsed Mayor Heather Fargo and supervisorial candidate
Warren Harding. A box near the bottom of the mailer reveals that Johnson and
Peters paid for their endorsement. Such paid "slate mailers" are commonplace
in elections, but critics say they deceive voters.

"It's totally legal; it's just deceptive," said Alex Barrios, a Democratic
spokesman. "Susan Peters is a Republican, so for her to appear on a
Democratic slate mailer is just completely deceptive."
