In 2004, when no Democratic candidate was willing to run against Richard Pombo, Jerry McNerney stood up for Democrats and working families in our community. Jerry got into the race for the Congressional seat in California's District 11 because his son, Michael, an officer in the US Air Force, received his absentee ballot and realized that Richard Pombo was running for Congress unopposed. Michael urged his father to do his duty for his country, much as Mike had done after 9/11, and run against Pombo so that thousands of voters in the district would have a choice when they cast their ballot.
Running as a last-minute write-in candidate, Jerry McNerney went on to win 104,000 votes, more than any other Democratic candidate in the history of the district.
Now Jerry McNerney is back, and this time he has the community-based support and the organization to finish the job.
Richard Pombo has been a Republican member of Congress since 1992. As the years have gone by, he has become more and more disconnected from the real everyday problems of his district and increasingly focused on pursuing an extremist right-wing property rights agenda. In recent months, he has passed legislation out of the House eviscerating the Endangered Species Act, opening the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil drilling, and selling off national park and forest lands to developers who hold mineral rights.
Jerry McNerney is an engineer and an expert in renewable energy. He is determined to use his knowledge and experience to help direct this nation's energy policy toward sustainability while also creating the jobs and prosperity so desperately needed in his district.
Please join me in our fight to elect Jerry McNerney to Congress. You can find out more about Jerry and his campaign by visiting www.jerrymcnerney.org.
Thank you
