You’ve already heard about how the President’s proposed budget would cut
taxes to benefit the rich, while cutting funding for programs that help the
rest of us – programs like Medicaid, food stamps, job training, veterans’
health services, education, housing, and community development grants. We
all know that Bush’s budget proposal is an irresponsible and immoral
document that sets the wrong priorities for our nation.

But the President’s proposal was only the first step in a budget battle that
will take us into April. It is now up to Congress to draft a budget
resolution. Right now, the Senate Budget Committee is working toward
drafting a budget bill, which will become the basis for Congress’ budget
debate. The next week is critical, as the committee works out the details of
what will be included in this bill. We need to do everything we can – right
now – to remind Congress that this budget should reflect the needs of all
Americans, not just the wealthy few.

It is crucial to let Senators Feinstein and Boxer, and your local
congressperson, know that they must fight on our behalf against the proposed
budget.  What we are hearing from Washington, D.C. is that Congress is not
hearing from constituents about these issues.  WE CAN HELP MAKE THAT CHANGE
ON MARCH 8-10th!!!!

The Message:

·          Tell the person with whom you are speaking that you would like to
leave a message for the Senator.

·          Ask the person to take your name, address, and phone number.

·          Thank them for their time.

Tell Your Senator: 
This is a bad budget proposal. Members of Congress must not support a budget
that makes deep cuts to or caps spending on programs like Medicaid, child
care, food stamps, the Earned Income Tax Credit, veterans’ medical care,
community development, education, and law enforcement programs. Cuts to
these and other programs would reduce or eliminate services critical to
millions of people across the country.
This budget reflects the wrong priorities. Our nation should be investing in
programs that help all of us to afford the basic necessities, raise healthy
children, get an education, and have a fair chance to make a decent life for
ourselves and our families. Instead, Congress is considering a budget
proposal that cuts billions from programs that serve children, working
adults, veterans, and the elderly.
This is the wrong way to reduce the deficit. When President Bush took
office, he inherited a budget surplus of well over $200 billion. Today we
have a record high deficit of $427 billion. The Bush administration has
spent the bulk of federal funds not on programs that help all of us, but on
the war, tax cuts for the wealthy, and pet programs such as the Medicare
prescription drugs benefit. The domestic programs that are on the chopping
block today represent less than 20 percent of the federal budget. Even
cutting them ALL wouldn’t eliminate the budget deficit.
